Project-based learning cements knowledge in a way that reading and exercises alone cannot. Building something real forces you to confront gaps in your understanding and make decisions that tutorials never put in front of you.
How to Use This File¶
- Choose a project at or slightly above your current level.
- Don't use tutorials for your chosen project. Tutorials are for learning; projects are for applying.
- Document your attempt using the Project Attempt Template at the bottom.
- When you finish, link the result (photos, document, plan) in the table in the topic README.
Beginner Projects¶
Focus: get comfortable with the core vocabulary, tools, and planning process. Complete at least one before advancing past Module 03.
B1: Room Renovation Plan¶
Description: Choose a real room in your home (or a hypothetical room with specific dimensions) and produce a complete renovation plan: a basic croqui (sketch floor plan with dimensions), list of all materials needed with quantities calculated, and a budget estimate using SINAPI or local supplier prices.
Concepts Reinforced: - Reading and producing a basic floor plan - Material quantity calculation (floor area, wall area, tile quantities with waste factor) - Budget estimation using SINAPI or supplier catalogs - Identifying DIY vs. professional tasks
Estimated Time: 6–10 hours
Starting Point: Any room in your home, or use this hypothetical: a 3.0 m × 3.5 m bedroom needing new floor tiles, painted walls, and a new electrical outlet.

B2: Tools Inventory and Gap Analysis¶
Description: Create a complete inventory of the tools available to you for home renovation work. For each module in this topic, identify which tools are required, which you already have, and which you would need to buy or rent. Produce a prioritized shopping/rental list with costs.
Concepts Reinforced: - Understanding what tools are needed for each type of work - Buy vs. rent decision-making for infrequently used tools - Understanding safety equipment requirements (PPE)
Estimated Time: 3–5 hours
Starting Point: Read the tool lists in Modules 01, 06, 07, and 08 before starting.

Intermediate Projects¶
Focus: combine multiple concepts, apply material calculation formulas in a real context. Complete at least one before advancing past Module 07.
I1: Bathroom Renovation Specification¶
Description: Produce a complete technical specification for a bathroom renovation. Choose a real or hypothetical bathroom (provide dimensions). The specification must cover: waterproofing (impermeabilização) design, tile layout plan (drawn on graph paper or similar), hydraulic points to be maintained or moved, and an itemized bill of materials.
Concepts Reinforced: - Impermeabilização design and product selection - Tile layout planning (accounting for cuts, centering, doorway alignment) - Integration of hydraulic and electrical considerations - Specification writing (product names, quantities, application instructions)
Estimated Time: 12–16 hours
Starting Point: Use a real or hypothetical bathroom of approximately 2.5 m × 2.0 m. You will need to apply concepts from Modules 05, 07, 08, and 09.

I2: Electrical Circuit Audit¶
Description: Map the electrical installation of an existing space (your home or a family member's). Identify all circuits, their breaker ratings, the loads connected to each, and whether the installation is compliant with NBR 5410. Produce a written audit report with findings and recommendations.
Concepts Reinforced: - Circuit identification and mapping - Load calculation per circuit (total wattage vs. breaker capacity) - NBR 5410 compliance checking (circuit separation, GFCI requirements for wet areas, grounding) - Risk assessment and prioritization of recommended improvements
Estimated Time: 8–12 hours
Starting Point: You will need the concepts from Module 04. You will need a non-contact voltage tester (detector de tensão) and a pen and paper. Do not open panels or touch wiring.

I3: Material Specification for a Kitchen Renovation¶
Description: Produce a full material specification for a kitchen renovation including: new floor and wall tiles (with layout plan), countertop material selection and justification, cabinet design sketch, and a list of all plumbing work required. Research and compare three competing product options for each major material category.

Estimated Time: 12–18 hours
Starting Point: Use a real or hypothetical kitchen of approximately 3.5 m × 4.0 m.

Advanced Projects¶
Focus: tackle realistic, open-ended renovation problems involving multiple systems.
A1: Complete Renovation Plan for a Small Apartment¶
Description: Produce a complete renovation plan for a 45–60 m² apartment. The plan must include: architectural floor plan before and after (even a hand-drawn croqui is acceptable), complete electrical redesign with circuit layout, hydraulic system mapping, material specifications for all finishes, itemized budget, and a phased execution timeline showing what work must be done in what order and why.
Why This Is Hard: Real renovation projects require systems to be coordinated — you cannot tile walls before electrical and hydraulic rough-in is done. You must understand the dependencies between trades and sequence the work correctly. Budget and timeline must be realistic, not wishful.
Concepts Reinforced: - Systems integration (electrical, hydraulic, structural, finishes must be coordinated) - Work sequencing and trade dependencies - Realistic cost estimation - Risk identification (what could go wrong? what contingencies are needed?) - Contractor briefing and scope-of-work writing

Starting Point: You will need concepts from all of Modules 01–09. Use a real apartment or a hypothetical floor plan (one will be provided in Module 12).

A2: Rooftop Laje Waterproofing Specification¶
Description: Design a complete waterproofing (impermeabilização) system for a flat concrete roof (laje de cobertura). The specification must cover: substrate assessment and preparation, waterproofing product selection (flexible membrane, rigid coating, or asphalt sheet), application procedure, drainage design (slope requirements per ABNT), and a maintenance schedule with inspection checklist.
Why This Is Hard: Waterproofing failures are the most common and expensive construction pathology in Brazil. A correct specification requires understanding substrate conditions, movement joints, thermal cycling, chemical compatibility, and how to detail penetrations (pipes, drains, vents) — the details where most failures occur.
Concepts Reinforced: - Impermeabilização product selection and compatibility - Drainage slope design (minimum 1% per ABNT) - Detailing of penetrations, flashings, and movement joints - Long-term maintenance planning
Estimated Time: 15–20 hours

Expert / Capstone Projects¶
Focus: synthesize everything. Produce a professional-quality document or real-world deliverable.
E1: Full Renovation Project Package for a Residential Property¶
Description: This is the capstone of the entire topic. Produce a complete, professional-quality renovation project package for a real or hypothetical residential property. The package must be detailed enough that a licensed engineer or architect could review it, a contractor could price it, and a bank (e.g., Caixa CEF) could evaluate it for a crédito para reforma loan.
Why This Is a Capstone: This project requires mastery of all major topic areas. You cannot complete it with gaps — they will surface immediately. Expect to revisit earlier modules during the build. The quality of real renovation planning is not measured by knowledge of individual skills but by how well you integrate them into a coherent, executable plan.

Extension Ideas (for more challenge): - Include a solar energy system design as per ANEEL micro-generation rules - Add an accessibility (acessibilidade, NBR 9050) audit and upgrade plan - Develop a sustainability rating using the AQUA-HQE or PROCEL Edifica framework
[!NOTE] The final module of this topic (Module 12: Capstone Project) is a dedicated guided walkthrough of this project. It provides milestones, checkpoints, and a Help / Getting Unstuck section with staged hints — but it deliberately does not hand you a finished document. The help is there so you can get past a blocker and keep going on your own. Struggling through the decisions is the learning here.
