Road trips and unexpected breakdowns are the real-world test of everything you've learned. Module 11 is about preparedness: what to check before any long journey, what to carry in your car at all times, and how to handle the most common roadside emergencies confidently and safely. Statistically, you will experience a flat tire, a dead battery, or an overheating event at some point in your driving life. This module ensures that when it happens, it's inconvenient rather than catastrophic.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Complete a structured 15-point pre-trip vehicle inspection before any journey over 200 miles
  2. Assemble a practical emergency kit covering the most common roadside scenarios
  3. Change a flat tire safely on the roadside, including traffic awareness and proper lug nut torque sequence
  4. Jump-start a vehicle safely in a real roadside scenario (including safety considerations for bystanders and traffic)
  5. Handle an overheating event: safe pullover, cooldown procedure, temporary repair options
  6. Describe the basic procedure for towing a conventional vehicle and a front-wheel-drive vehicle (the risks of flat towing AWD/4WD)
  7. Know when to stop trying to fix it and call a tow truck

Theory

Pre-Trip Inspection (15 Points)

Designed for the day before or morning of a trip over 200 miles. Covers: engine oil level and condition, coolant level, brake fluid level, tire pressure (all four + spare), tire tread and visual condition, serpentine belt visual inspection, all exterior lights, windshield wiper condition, washer fluid level, battery terminal condition, brakes (firm pedal, no warning lights), HVAC (heat/AC functional for expected conditions), OBD-II check for pending codes, and emergency kit present.

Emergency Kit Contents

Essential items: spare tire (inflated), jack and lug wrench (came with car), reflective triangles or road flares (3 minimum), jumper cables or jump-start pack, flashlight + extra batteries, basic tool kit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench, duct tape), nitrile gloves, first aid kit, blanket, water (2 liters), phone charger cable and car adapter, phone mount for GPS navigation, pen and paper for accident documentation.

Optional additions for long trips: tow strap, tire inflator with pressure gauge, extra coolant (correct type), extra engine oil (correct spec), rain gear, signal mirror.

Flat Tire Procedure

Prerequisites: safe location (as far from traffic as possible, flat stable surface), hazard lights on. Procedure: set reflective triangles behind car (min 20 feet back), retrieve spare and tools, loosen lug nuts before jacking (important — use body weight on the lug wrench), locate jack point, lift car until flat tire 6 inches off ground, remove flat, mount spare, hand-tighten lug nuts in star pattern, lower car, torque lug nuts to spec (80–120 ft-lb typical — confirm for your vehicle), stow flat and tools, remove reflective triangles before driving off.

Donut spare speed and distance limits: maximum 50 mph (80 km/h); maximum range varies but typically 70–150 km before replacement.

Overheating Emergency

Signs: temperature gauge in red zone, steam from engine bay, burning smell, loss of engine power. Procedure: turn off AC immediately (reduces engine load), turn on heater full blast (uses engine as radiator — buys you 1–3 minutes of additional cooling time), find a safe place to pull over, turn off engine, wait minimum 30 minutes (do not open radiator or coolant reservoir on hot engine — scalding hazard), after cooling visually check coolant reservoir level, if low add water (emergency temporary measure, not coolant — water is fine for getting to a shop), restart and monitor closely; if temperature rises quickly again, stop and call tow truck.

Towing Basics

Flat towing (all four wheels on road): requires specific vehicles (certain 4WD with transferable neutral), confirmed procedure in owner's manual. Any AWD vehicle flat-towed without proper procedure will destroy the transmission or transfer case. Dolly towing: front wheels lifted on dolly, rear on road; only for FWD vehicles, not RWD or AWD. Trailer/flatbed: safest method; all wheels off the road; suitable for any vehicle. When in doubt: request a flatbed.

  • Lug nut torque sequence: Star pattern (not circular) ensures even seating of the wheel; critical for preventing wheel-off incidents
  • Engine heater trick: Turning on cabin heat uses the engine cooling system as an extra heat exchanger; buys time during overheating
  • Flat towing danger: AWD and 4WD vehicles cannot be flat-towed without proper procedure; confirms with owner's manual before any towing situation

Common Pitfalls

  • Tightening lug nuts in a circle pattern instead of star pattern — causes uneven seating and wheel vibration
  • Not loosening lug nuts before jacking — cross-threaded nuts are hard to break loose with the car off the ground and the wheel spinning
  • Opening the radiator cap when the engine is hot — severe scalding risk
  • Not knowing the spare tire is flat until needed — check spare pressure quarterly
  • Driving on a donut spare at highway speeds or long distances — donut spares are emergency tools, not tires
