Q001: What exactly happens inside the engine during "knock" or "pinging"?

Full question: The module mentions that high compression requires high-octane fuel to prevent "premature detonation" or knock. But what exactly is happening physically? Is the fuel exploding before the spark fires? What damage does it cause?

My current hypothesis: I think the fuel-air mixture auto-ignites from compression heat before the spark plug fires, meaning combustion starts in the wrong phase of the cycle. This would push against the piston when it's still rising (compression stroke) rather than when it's going down (power stroke), which would feel like a knock.

Q002: How do hybrid vehicles handle the four-stroke cycle when the electric motor assists?

Full question: The module covers the four-stroke cycle for ICE engines. But in a hybrid, an electric motor can provide torque too. Does the ICE still run a full four-stroke cycle when the electric motor is helping? Can the ICE cylinders "skip" strokes somehow?

My current hypothesis: I think the ICE still runs a full four-stroke cycle whenever the engine is running — you can't selectively skip strokes because the valve timing and firing order are mechanically fixed. The electric motor just adds power on top of what the ICE produces.
